Liou, University of California, Los Angles
Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and
Director of the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and
Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles. The institute has the primary mission to study global
climate change and its impact on regional climate and environment. Professor Liou’s recent work focuses
on radiative transfer and satellite remote sensing in mountain/snow regions and
the deposition of black carbon and dust over these areas in association with
surface temperature and snowmelt amplification and feedback. Dr. Liou was elected to the National Academy of
Engineering of the United States in 1999 and served as a past Chair of its
Special Fields and Interdisciplinary Engineering Section (2008-2010). He was
elected to the Academia Sinica (Chinese Academy of Sciences, Taiwan) in 2004. Professor
Liou is a Fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science,
Optical Society of America, American Geophysical Union, and American
Meteorological Society (AMS). He was the recipient of the AMS Jule Charney
Award in 1998, shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Certificate bestowed on the
IPCC, received the 2010 COSPAR Biennial William Nordberg Medal, and recently
was awarded the 2012 International Radiation Commission’s Quadrennial Gold
Medal
